Q: How many dice do I roll when I attack with a base of infantry? do I roll 1 dice for each man with a rifle? like 25 dice or something?
A: Roll once for each Group of weapons that a base has. So 1 dice for Rifles, 1 dice for AT rifles, 1 dice for rocket launchers, 1 dice for HMGs, and 1 dice for grenades.
In this manner a single base of infantry can make up to 5 different attacks (each rolling 1 dice), per turn. This is assuming mid war where the base is armed with both AT rifles and Rocket launchers. Remember that you have to nominate all your targets for a base before resolving the attacks.
Vehicles on the other hand, roll once for each weapon. So a vehicle with 2 HMGs and a main gun can make 2 attacks with HMGS (1 dice each) and a 3rd attack with the main gun
Q: Once infantry take 50% casualties, what happens next time they take 50% casualties?
A: They are removed. all dead. Infantry are fragile and are best used in a defensive role, or well supported by tanks, field guns, air support and suchlike, and usually only make a move once an area is cleared of the heaviest enemy forces. Advancing into an area where lots of enemy infantry are gone to ground in cover is somewhat suicidal.
Q: Shouldn't there be artillery spotters, commanders and medics and stuff around?
A: In Ostfront we assume these units are operating in the background, but aren't directly involved in the fighting. There will be artillery spotters at key locations, allowing you to target anything on the table. Likewise with commanders, there will always be someone within radio contact who can transmit and receive orders
Q: Why does air support cancel out? shouldn't both players get the air support if they pay for it?
A: We assume that the opposing air forces will be engaging each other before being able to focus on the ground combat, if both players have an even amount of air support, the skies above the battlefield will be a huge aerial battle, with neither player having quite enough of an advantage to effect the ground battle. In Ostfront its all about air Superiority, not just the air support.
Q: Does the Gun Shield of a field gun stack with cover?
A: No. The gun shield gives -1 damage against HMGs and Rifles, but it does not stack with regular cover. If a field gun is behind a low wall or some other cover, it will be -1 damage, even if being shot by HMGs or rifles. The only time infantry or field guns get -2 damage is if they are in a Fortified position like a Bunker. While inside a bunker, a Field gun is always at -2 damage, and the gun shield is no longer counted.
Note that being gone to ground will give a a further -1 to damage. So a field gun behind a low wall, with a crew that has gone to ground will be -2 damage. And likewise a field gun in a fortified bunker, with a crew that has gone to ground, will be -3 damage. Don't forget field guns can't fire during any turns they spend gone to ground
