Played a 250 point mid war game today for a couple of visiting wargamers, as a quick example game. Went very well! Lists:Wehrmacht 2 X Infantry Platoons | 20 | Pz. IV E | 9 | 2 X Pz. III | 14 | 2 X Pz. IVG | 28 | Panther | 31 | 2 X Tigers | 90 | Flak 88 | 13 | 4 X Kubelwagon | 8 | Sdkfz. 222 | 3 | Pak 40 | 8 | Howitzer Battery | 26 |
| 250 |
Soviet 2 X Howitzer Batteries | 52 | 4 X Infantry Platoons | 40 | 4 X Zis-3 Field Guns | 32 | 7 X T-70 | 35 | 2 X Katyusha | 26 | 6 X T-34/76 | 60 | 2 X GAZ-67 | 4 |
| 249 |
Deployment was pitched battle, and the Scenario was "flag capture" with the moving objective in the center. Soviets took the first turn, and pushed forward with everything they had, claiming the 1 recon card and advancing on all fronts. Wehrmacht guns destroyed most of the tanks on the way in, but the infantry in the center were very close to claiming the objective, before being annihilated by close range howitzer and Tiger fire. Wehrmacht swung around the Soviet right flank, utilizing a hull down position on a hill ridge, and wrecking havoc on the Soviet center and back line Zis-3 guns. The Soviets left flank was able to break through, with 2 T-34s and 2 T-70s coming very close to the German panzers. After a couple of poor turns from the Wehrmacht, two of the T-70s made it into close range of the Tiger. One was liquified at point blank range, but the other was able to hit the side of the Tiger at close range, Destroying its engine and immobilizing it. The next turn the Tiger failed to hit the T-70 (needing a 2+, it rolled a 1) and the T-70 remarkably was able to destroy the Tiger from its close range, side-facing position. The Soviets proceeded to take heavy casualties and pretty much everything was dead at the end of the game save for the back line field guns. A unit of Wehrmacht infantry briefly held the objective, but they didn't survive to the end of the game. Due to neither player holding the objective, the game was a draw, albeit with the Soviet force taking heavy casualties (almost 75%), and the Wehrmacht still having a Tiger and Panther operational, as well as an entire Infantry platoon untouched and a Panzer III still operating. It was a good game, and quite close, with plenty of swing backwards and forwards. Carnage - around turn 5. game ended after turn 8.

Early war 200 points - Play-testing a scenario: Battle of MtsenskThe Scenario: imgur.com/a/RG5DTWehrmacht Army List - Everything had to be mechanized - all infantry in transports, and all field guns deployed packed up2 X Howitzer Battery | 52 | 2 X Flak 88 | 32 | 2 X PaK 40 | 16 | 3 X Kubelwagon | 6 | 4 X Assault Infantry bases | 40 | 4 X Sdk.251 Hanomag Half Tracks | 12 | 3 X Pz.38 (t) | 15 | 2 X Pz.III | 14 | 3 X PaK 38 | 9 | Panzer II | 4 |
| 200 |
Soviet Army List - Split in half: One half an infantry division (75%, not including air support or preliminary bombardments, must be infantry or field guns. the other 25% can be whatever you like), the other half an armor division (75% must be armored vehicles - tanks or SPGs/Assault Guns, 25% free choice) Infantry Portion - Holding the city2 X Preliminary Bombardments | 26 | Howitzer Battery | 26 | 3 X Platoons Regular Infantry (6 bases) | 30 | 2 X Zis-3 Field Guns | 16 | 2 X BA-10 Armored Cars | 10 | GAZ-67 Jeep | 2 |
| 100 |
Armored Portion - Deployed in reserve and outflanking
6 X T-34/76
| 84 | 3 X T-70 | 15 |
| 99 |
Wehrmacht took a good balanced list, put some veterans in half tracks to good use, and some meticulously positioned PaK 38s, as well as plenty of Armor. Soviet preliminary bombardment took a flak 88 out of action before the game had even started, and the infantry division dug in around the city, but were decimated by Wehrmacht howitzers and tank advances, as well as the advancing veterans, although Soviet infantry inflicted horrendous casualties on the veterans. The Soviet armored division was late showing up (not until turn 4) and finally came on from a flank, but superior Wehrmacht recon (and denial of soviet recon) allowed german panzers to still get the drop on them. A cluster of PaK 38s, backed up by a Pz.III and 2 Pz.38(t)s held out against 6 T-34s and 2 T-70s, and between them and the Howitzers, they blunted the flank attack down to nothing, although the PaK 38s gave their lives to do so. The Wehrmacht having cleared one side of the main building in the Soviet deployment zone used this blind spot to advance a Pz.II and Pz.III deep into the soviet lines. The Pz.II gambled with time (the game could have ended at any time by this stage) and made a rush to the supply train (would have meant instant victory for the Wehrmacht) but the game ended just as it did so, and the final tally of units in the Objective area was 2 Soviet, and 1 Wehrmacht. A Soviet Phyrric victory - both the infantry and the armor divisions lost 90% of their forces... In a campaign game the Wehrmacht would have counted as winning the scenario, and capturing the supply train, and the Soviet force would have been removed from the map. So essentially a Wehrmacht Victory! Pretty tense game, with plenty of tough decisions - Wehrmacht player used his field guns exceptionally well, redeploying them when necessary (always a tough decision - sacrificing 3 turns to move and set up in a new position) and the Soviets failing to make use of recon, as well as being pretty reckless with their armor (and it turning up fairly late) made for a slaughter! Carnage - Around turn 6. The central building can be seen in the background, where soviet infantry holed up until the end of the game.

Late War 250 Points - Soviet vs WehrmachtAn example game down at the local gaming club Soviet List 4 X NKL Aerosan | 8 | 5 X Infantry Platoons | 50 | 6 X T-34/85 | 72 | 4 X Assault Infantry bases | 40 | 2 X Air Support Units | 44 | Mortar Squad | 15 | 4 X T-70 | 20 |
| 250 |
Wehrmacht List (or at least what I remember of it - seems to be slightly over points....) King Tiger (Tiger II) | 54 | Tiger | 43 | Panther | 27 | 2 X Infantry Platoon | 20 | 2 X PaK 40 | 16 | 4 X Assault Infantry bases | 40 | 2 X Howitzer battery | 52 | 2 X Flak 88 | 13 |
| 265 |
This was an interesting game, the Wehrmacht player opting for a heavy tank orientated defensive type force, and completely neglecting recon and lighter medium tanks. This composition didn't fare so well against the medium tank and infantry spam, combined with air support, that the Soviets fielded. It was a classic late war type game though - a very historical looking set up. It was a moving objective in the center, and a pitched battle deployment. The Start of the game The Soviets advanced immediately, rushing forwards with everything at top speed. Wehrmacht guns managed to immobilize a T-34 or two, but it wasn't enough, most of the guns failed to destroy their targets, or were busy defending against air strikes, while the howitzers didn't perform well at all for the Wehrmacht. After a few turns the soviets were advancing at combat speed, with T-34s blowing up field guns left and right (I rolled a few 7s to damage against PaK 40s - wiping them out immediately) Assault infantry clashed on the flanks, with both taking decent casualties. By about turn 5 the soviets were well ahead, most of the Wehrmacht field guns were gone (including the Howitzers) and both flanks had been rolled over by T-34s, T-70s and infantry. A mass of Soviet infantry surged through the center, and the Panther and Tiger were both destroyed. By the time the game ended after turn 7, only the King Tiger was still operational, gunning down Soviet infantry in the center, as they threatened to overrun it with grenade attacks. Soviet infantry took the Wehrmacht supply train with 3 or 4 bases of infantry - a very solid victory to the Soviets. In a campaign game the Wehrmacht would have taken 75% casualties, while the Soviets only about 25%. Good to see the soviets doing well for once, I think if the Wehrmacht had taken just a few medium tanks instead of perhaps the panther, and some light vehicles or PaK 38s for defense they may have done a bit better, but they did roll rather poorly during the first few turns, and often that can't be helped.

Italians vs British - Mid War, 200 PointsRoyal Italian Army 6 X Fiat M14 Carro Armato | 30 | 5 X Infantry Platoons | 50 | 4 X Semovente da 75mm | 36 | 3 X Autocannone da 90 | 42 | Howitzer Battery | 26 | Autoblinda | 3 | Preliminary Bombardment | 13 |
| 200 |
British List 2 X Mortar Teams | 30 | 6 X Infantry Platoons | 60 | 4 X Valentine Tanks | 24 | 3 X Matilda Tanks | 24 | 4 X Bren Carrier | 8 | 3 X Willys Jeep | 6 | Mk IV Churchill | 22 | Howitzer Battery | 26 |
| 200 |
One of the hardest games I've ever played, with both commanders trying their utmost to use all units to their maximum capacity. I played the Italians, and attempted to rush a flank with Carro Armatos, and was able to seize the initiative and ace the recon, allowing me to mine one section of the battlefield. My Autocannone da 90s wrecked havoc on the British infantry and slowed down some Matildas, but the 6-prds of the Valentines proved fatal for my Carro Armato light tanks at close range, and my main flank attack failed. We both sustain heavy casualties, but in the end the British were able to pull a close victory, having contested one of my table quarters by sneaking up a unit of infantry behind the cover of a burning carro armato. Good game! Deployment and just before the start of the game - recon cards place - rolled maximum (3 cards) The Carro Armato "flank attack" which was smashed by 6-pdrs The battle from the British left flank Italian infantry advancing behind a burning carro armato

"Fire in the Water" Scenario from the Japanese Army list - Mid War
Imperial Japanese Army 4 Infantry platoons (8 bases) | 40 | 6 X Assault infantry bases | 60 | 2 X 75mm Mountain gun batteries | 32 | 2 X Type 97 Chi-Ha light tanks | 8 | 3 X Howitzer Batteries | 78 | 6 Machine Gun Nests | 30 |
| 248 |
US army 9 X Assault infantry bases | 90 | 8 X Infantry Platoons | 80 | 9 X LCVP Higgins boats | 36 | 5 X LVT Buffalo | 15 | 4 X Sherman | 36 | 2 X 105 Sherman | 24 | 4 Preliminary Bombardments | 52 | 2 X Air Support | 40 |
| 375 |
This was a very messy scenario, with massive US casualties over the space of about 10 minutes in-game time. The battle ended up in a draw: US were able to get a foothold on the left flank of the beach, but weren't able to clear the entire beachhead of Japanese forces. Very fun and nicely balanced game, full of uncertainty and heroism. The battle had 9 higgins boats and we only have 2 miniatures so had paper slips standing in, half tracks standing in for LVT buffalos and some Brits standing in for US. The first wave of US marines heading ashore under heavy fire US attempt to push the left flank, after preliminary bombardments had partially cleared the area of Japanese resistance Japanese on the right flank quickly mobilize to meet the threat, but must run the gauntlet of beached higgins boats - each with 2 HMGs. They attempt to take down the higgins boats with the mountain gun artillery, and using rifle grenades and AT rifles. US forces firmly holding the left flank of the beach near the end of the game (ended after turn 7) One of the staged photos taken after the battle, minus the paper slips, half-tracks and desert British stand ins: Another staged beach landing photo - close up on our recently completely LCVP higgins boats. Now just need 7 more of them! (thats probably not going to happen!)
